Ironhide was an Autobot Transformer who could transform into a red van. Ironhide was an experienced, tough, yet old soldier. Ironhide first appeared in the episode More Than Meets The Eye- Part 1. In Transformers:The Movie, he was killed off and replaced by Kup, an even older, yet more annoying character of the same archetype.
Ironhide is sometimes considered the "brother" or "twin" of Ratchet.
Ironhide had a bewildering number of special abilities, the most out of any character in the Gen 1 Universe.
Ironhide had incredibly tough metal skin, from which his name is derived. Normally this makes Ironhide impervious to most attacks. Strangely enough, when Ironhide was thrown against a computer terminal in the Ark during it's maiden voyage, he broke his arm in such a way that a gush of "lubricant" spewed forth.
