The Dinobots are a group of five autobot transformers that transform into mechanical versions of various dinosaurs. They are lead by Grimlock and were created by WheelJack and Ratchet. They are one of the few (possibly the only) team of transformers that do not combine into a larger transformer. They are also one of the few transformers not created on Cybertron.
The original three Dinobots were introduced in the episode S.O.S Dinobots. The other two, Snarl and Swoop were created later.
The Dinobots were created after Wheeljack had been inspired to create robot dinosaurs after seeing the bones of dinosaurs in a cave adjacent to the Ark and visiting a museum which had complete sets of dinosaur bones on display. Wheeljack and Ratchet get the approval of Optimus Prime and start building the Dinobots.
The three original Dinobots had no more intelligence than a real dinosaur, therefore when they are first activated, they trash the Ark and do severe damage to Teletraan-I. Immediately after the Dinobots are stopped, Optimus Prime orders them deactivated because he believed that they were uncontrollable and dangerous.
